Bishopthorpe Bowling Club
Club Competitions are open to all fully paid-up members - the closing date for entries this season was Wednesday 22 May 2019. The finals were played on the weekend of Saturday 31 August/Sunday 1 September 2019. More photos in the Gallery.
The following competitions are available for entry:
Men's Singles Competition
A men's singles competition played with four bowls each. The winner is the first to 21 shots, with a maximum of 18 ends.
The 2019 winner and runner-up were once again David Thackwray and Steve Raisbeck respectively.
Ladies Singles Competition
A ladies singles competition played with four bowls each. The winner is the first to 21 shots, with a maximum of 18 ends.
The 2018 winner was Belinda Raisbeck and the runner-up was Pauline Smith. The Competition did not run in 2019 as there were insufficient entrants.
Open Singles Competition
A singles competition, open to ladies and gentlemen, played with four bowls each. The winner is the first to 21 shots, with a maximum of 18 ends.
The 2018 winner was Steve Raisbeck and the runner-up was Ron Munro. The Competition did not run in 2019 as there were no lady entrants (see below).
Men's Pairs Competition - Trophy sponsored by Yorkshire Plumbing Ltd
A men's pairs competition played with four bowls each over 18 ends. Pairs are selected on a random basis. A new Men's Pairs Winners Trophy has been sponsored by Jamie Bunyan of Yorkshire Plumbing Ltd.
The 2019 winners were Franco Napoletano & David Thackwray and the runners-up were David Maughan Brown & Derek Smith.
Ladies Pairs Competition
A ladies pairs competition played with four bowls each over 18 ends. Pairs are selected on a random basis. There were insufficient entrants in both 2018 and 2019.
Mixed Pairs Competition
A mixed pairs competition played with four bowls each over 18 ends. Pairs are selected on a random basis, whilst ensuring that each pair includes one male and one female member.
The 2019 winners were Sue Prime & Franco Napoletano and the runners-up were Margaret Gardiner & Will Clarke.
Married Couples Competition
A pairs competition for married couples played with four bowls each over 18 ends.
The 2019 winners were Liz & Mick Tillett and the runners-up were Sally & Will Clarke.
Peter Meek Triples Competition
A mixed triples competition played with three bowls each over 18 ends. Teams are drawn at random, but must include at least one lady and one gentleman. The first round of this competition was played on Saturday 8 June 2019.
The 2019 winners were Margaret Sackville, David Maughan Brown & Martin Prime and the runners-up were Kate Radley, Jack Burgess & Gerry Tredgett. Sue Prime presented the finalists with bottles of wine on behalf of Jean Meek, who was unable to attend.
The Competition Secretary reserves the right not to run any competition if there are insufficient entries to make it worthwhile.
Generally, singles competitions will not be run unless there are at least 8 entrants. Additionally, in the case of the Open Singles Competition, there must be at least one male and one female entry. Pairs and triples competitions will not generally run unless there are at least four teams participating.
Club Night Trophies
The Club Night trophies are awarded to members achieving the highest number of winning points in their first 15 attendances at Club Night during the season.
The overall Club Night winner in 2019 was Margaret Sackville and the Leading Man was David Thackwray.
Two-Wood Open Competition
This is a Club knock-out competition, open to ladies and gentlemen. First and second round losers are entered into a Consolation Competition. The limited-end matches are all played during the course of a single afternoon. The matches are followed by a traditional strawberry tea, which was held this year on Sunday 21 July 2019.
The 2019 winner was Franco Napoletano and the runner-up was Ray Higgins. Winner of the Consolation Competition was David Thackwray and the runner-up was Jack Burgess.
Two-Wood Pairs Competition
This is a Club competition, open to ladies and gentlemen, in which the pairings are drawn on a completely random basis. There is a Group Stage of limited-end matches, from which winners and runners-up go through to the semi-finals. All matches are played during the course of a single afternoon. This year the competition was held on Saturday 10 August 2019, and was followed by a buffet tea.
The 2019 winners were Ron Munro & Michael Nicholls and the runners-up were Sue Prime & Leslie Walker.
