About the Club

Founded in 1927, the Club is located in the village of Bishopthorpe, home of the Archbishop of York, who is the Club's Patron. We are a friendly flat green bowling club, open to both men and women and always ready to welcome new members.  If you have not played before and are thinking of joining us, we can arrange free taster sessions at any time during the season - please see the 'Free Taster Sessions' page of our website for full details.

The Bowling Green is on Acaster Lane, Bishopthorpe and is open for play from mid-April until mid-September each year.  During the season weekly Social Bowling sessions (informal matches and practice games) are held on Tuesday mornings at 9.45am for a 10:00am start and Club Nights on Wednesday evenings at 6.15pm for a 6.30pm start (6.00pm start in April and September).  In addition, Members are welcome to play at any time during the season.

New members, both men and women, are always welcome.  Please call Sue on 01904 702708 or 07778291726 to arrange a visit or a trial session.  Membership is open to all.

The annual membership fee is £80 for adults (half price from 1 July), and £5 for juniors (12 to 17). Visitors are always welcome and can play for a green fee of £4.00 per 2-hour session.  If you decide to join us, any green fees paid will be deducted from the appropriate membership fee for the season.

Bowling can be enjoyed by all age groups and the Club accepts young people from the age of 12. (Please note that children under the age of 18 must be accompanied by a parent/guardian at all times). We can offer initial coaching, and if you're interested in playing competitively, we run teams in several York leagues and organise our own competitions throughout the season. As we are affiliated to Bowls England and Yorkshire Bowling Association, members can also enter national and county competitions.

We also hold occasional social bowling afternoons with more light-hearted matches, generally followed by afternoon tea.
